Video Editing: Blue Man Group.

Well, I haven’t done this in awhile. I guess this is one of the reasons why I went back to school! This week’s assignment for my Advanced Online Journalism class was to make sense of over an hour’s worth of footage of the Blue Man Group (shot by John Baynard, our award winning documentary filmmaker and professor), and package it into a two to three minute piece through editing.

I haven’t edited video like this in a long time, so I was quite frustrated with this when I first sat down at the computer. I struggled for a few hours before it all started coming back to me and things began to flow.

I’m pretty happy with how this came out for the first go around. Based on the footage I was given, there were a thousand ways I could have taken this piece. I decided to focus on the meaning of the performance and the significance of the “blue man,” according to those who created and act in the show.

“From left to right, Boston Red Sox outfielders Scott Podsednik, Cody Ross, and Daniel Nava have a laugh in centerfield during a pitching change in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday, September 26, 2012.”

It’s hard to believe, but last night was the last home game for the Boston Red Sox this year, bringing an end to the commemorative 100th anniversary season of Fenway Park.

It hasn’t quite sunk in for me yet that the season is over. You get in such a routine with this job, and spend so much time at the stadium, that it takes a few days off to realize that it’s actually over.

The game was lackluster, and ended in a Red Sox loss. So, here is an assortment of images from the last game.

I’m not going to share all my thoughts about my work this season here just yet. I’ll save that for later. I’m hOOOOOOping that there’s more baseball still to come…

“A Boston Red Sox logo cut in the center field grass at Fenway Park is shown Tuesday, September 25, 2012.”

We’ve reached the point of the season in Boston where the actual games themselves have become overshadowed in importance by other story lines going on. The Red Sox played their last two home games of the 2012 season this week, bringing a close to the 100th anniversary season at Fenway Park.

On Tuesday night, members of the 2004 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox team came back to Boston to greet fans. They were carted around the field in three Duck Tour boats, a throwback to the championship parade in Boston in 2004.

It was a pretty hectic event to shoot, but it was a lot of fun, and neat to see that incredible team all in one place!

Here are a some images from Sunday evening’s public memorial service for Boston Red Sox great Johnny Pesky, who passed away earlier this season. This was an interesting event to cover, as it brought together multiple generations of players and members of the Red Sox organization.

It’s difficult not to get good pictures when you have so many legends sitting in one spot together. It’s always good when you get Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, David Ortiz, Jason Varitek, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, Tim Wakefield, Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice, and Reggie Smith to name a few at the same time.

Not too much happening in the way of action during this game. I tried to mix things up and get some different angles, so I shot from the stands a good amount.

“Baltimore Orioles second baseman Robert Andino looks on from the dugout during a game against the Boston Red Sox Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Fenway Park.”

I’m way late on these, but here are some images from last Saturday’s game between the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles. I got some good action and we had some really nice light and shadows to work with, particularly throughout the later innings.

It was also fun to shoot some Orioles photos as they come down the stretch of an incredible playoff run!

Here is my first photo story of the year for the Advanced Photojournalism course I’m enrolled in at Boston University. Our assignment was to file a five photo story of anything happening on Boston Common. I was there quite a bit this week.

This is a simple but beautiful story about a gentle soul who finds peace every evening by flying his kites – which happens to be attached to a fishing rod. Read the captions. They actually matter this time!

Roy Gould is currently unemployed. A former fisherman who has been out of work for several years now, Roy takes to the Common regularly to fly his kites. “This is really my way to connect with nature,” he said.

We chatted for quite a bit, and I hung around and took photos of him for several hours. I thank Roy for being so friendly, and I wish him all the best.

For my Advanced Online Journalism class at Boston University, I was assigned to make a 15 photo story about some aspect of early morning life in Boston.

This morning, I chose to wake up before sunrise and head out to Boston Common to see what was going on. Here are my images from the excursion.

They’re a bit hodgepodge and don’t have much unity to them as a set, but I think that reflects nicely on how the scene is out there during those early morning hours. It’s interesting to see so many different types of people doing different things all at the same time.

I decided to take some time last Tuesday evening to shoot the men’s soccer match between Boston University and Holy Cross. This was the first sporting event I’ve covered at BU, so I thought this would be a good chance to break myself in.

The light was pretty bad, and tough to work with given the lenses I had. Sometimes, though, you’ve got to work with what you’re given, so that’s what I tried to do here. I overexposed on purpose quite a bit. That gave some of my frames a nice graphic, almost comic book feel to them.

I’m sure I’ll be shooting plenty more athletic events as the year goes on!

I’m a bit late on this post, but I didn’t shoot much game action from Wednesday night that was worth blogging about. Instead, I’ve posted a few miscellaneous frames I shot from the evening’s happenings around the park.

The ceremonial first pitch photo is just like every other ceremonial first pitch photo I shoot, except I thought it was pretty neat how broadcaster Joe Castiglione gave play by play commentary of his own pitch through his microphone while he was throwing it.
