Baseball, Baltimore, and a beautiful August day.

Today I had to walk around the ballpark to shoot photographs of some of the various party venues for publication on the Orioles’ ticketing website.

It was pretty mundane work until I got to the press box. I stepped outside to find an absolutely incredible Monday afternoon. Perfect temperature. Perfect breeze. Perfect sky.

So, as I made my rounds, I stopped to take some shots of the stadium and the cityscape from different areas. These are a few from what turned out to be a nice series of images. For some reason, through all these years of coming to games here, I never stopped and actually observed the views the stadium offers. Some of them are incredible, especially on a day like today.

Nolan Reimold lifted the Orioles to an extra innings win on Wednesday, hitting a two run walk off home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to beat the Chicago White Sox.

I had a great night shooting from start to finish, so that’s why I’m posting this many photos. I’ve been noticing the sunlight a lot as of late, so these are some variations on some of the other images that I’ve made recently.

Most importantly, though, this was the first walk off finish I’ve been at in which I’m truly satisfied with my celebration shots. This time, I stayed calm, didn’t try to shoot too many things at once, and came away with a nice set of images. It also helped that the players, particularly Robert Andino, went overboard with their reactions.

This game’s “Thing I Learned:” The camera I shoot with delays if you fire off too many shots in a row. Towards the end of the dog-pile at home plate, I wasn’t able to shoot any more because all the previous frame I had snapped didn’t load fast enough. So, next time I have to shoot that many frames, I’ll make sure to pace myself.

Baltimore Orioles Photography: Monday, August 8, 2011 vs. Chicago White Sox

Although it was close throughout, the Orioles dropped the first of a four game series against the Chicago White Sox.

Some games, it’s easier to know what to focus on than others. For example, everyone was making contact on Monday night, so the infielders were busy making plays all game. I only came away with a handful of shots of batters.

I also fooled around with the wide angle a bit.

This game’s “Thing I Learned:” The more action there is, the better I am at shooting. I really enjoy when it seems like there’s a play almost every pitch. It’s during those times when I find myself shooting with a nice rhythm.

I wanted to make this post to wrap up my first month back with the Orioles. There wasn’t too much action during the final three games of the last homestand, which allowed me to add some stadium shots to my portfolio.

We had absolutely perfect baseball weather, which produced some beautiful mid-summer light falling upon the stadium every evening. We really do have a stunning ballpark, and it’s these type of nights that I find myself thinking “This is really my job?”
